The city on the moraine

Hickory Hills started as a village in September 1951, covering 91st to 95th Streets between 80th and 88th Avenues, and became a city in 1966. Today it has 14,505 residents (2020 Census), ZIP code 60457, mostly in Palos Township with the part north of 87th Street in Lyons Township. The city sits on the Tinley Moraine, which is why parts of it are hilly.

The Palos Forest Preserves form its western edge and I-294 its eastern one. Palos Hills, Bridgeview, Justice and Willow Springs are the neighbours. 87th Street and 95th Street (US-12/US-20) are the main east-west roads, with Roberts Road, 88th Avenue and 76th Avenue running north and south. There’s no train station; Pace routes 379, 381 and 385 serve the city.

Hickory Hills landmarks

Lewis University’s satellite campus near 95th and Roberts. Hickory Hills Country Club, founded in 1917. Any of those, or a cross street on 87th or 95th, is enough to find a car.

Houses, two-flats and parking pads

About 71 percent of homes are owner-occupied, and roughly 60 percent are single-family detached, with about a third in buildings of two or more units, by 2020 to 2024 census estimates. The city code has strong views on where cars go, and they matter for a scrap car:

  • Paved surfaces only. Vehicles may be parked only on paved areas, not on the parkway, and stone driveways are prohibited, though existing single-family ones don’t have to change until a year after the house sells (§ 30.21(a)).
  • Unregistered cars. A vehicle without current state registration or a current city sticker can stay on a property for no more than seven days unless it’s in an enclosed garage (§ 30.21(b)).
  • Undrivable, disassembled or stripped cars may be kept only in an enclosed garage (§ 30.21(c)), and inoperable vehicles in public view are a nuisance that can be towed after seven days under the Illinois Vehicle Code (§ 30.21(d)).

That third rule is the one that catches half-finished projects. If you’ve been parting a car out on the driveway, it’s already out of bounds. Our page on stripped and incomplete cars explains how we price those, and scrap it or sell it for parts is worth a read before you pull anything else.

Hickory Hills street rules

  • Overnight. No parking on any city street from 2:00 to 6:00 a.m. (§ 41.17), a rule the city repeats on its resident page.
  • Snow. No standing or parking on any street once 2.5 inches or more has accumulated, until it’s cleared (§ 41.12).
  • Street cleaning. No parking while a posted street is being cleaned (§ 41.13).
  • Parkways. Parkway parking only on the listed paved parkways (§ 41.10), which include some side streets just north of 95th.
  • Alleys. Ten feet must stay clear and driveways unblocked (§ 41.18).
  • Trucks. Trucks over 8,000 pounds empty, commercial vehicles, tractors and trailers are barred from residential zones at any time (§ 41.09). A dead box truck parked out front is a problem from day one; see trucks, vans and SUVs.

How long can an unregistered car stay in my Hickory Hills driveway?
No more than seven days outside an enclosed garage, under § 30.21(b) of the city code.
Can I keep a stripped project car on a parking pad?
Not outside. Hickory Hills bans keeping an undrivable, disassembled or stripped vehicle on any property except in an enclosed garage.
Do I need a city sticker to sell my car for scrap?
No. The city's resident page says Hickory Hills doesn't require vehicle stickers for cars, only for commercial vehicles and trucks, and a scrap sale doesn't need one either way.

Not in the residential zones. Hickory Hills bars trucks over 8,000 pounds empty, commercial vehicles, tractors and trailers there at any time.
