Palos Hills in brief
Palos Hills was established as a city in 1958. It has 18,530 people (2020 Census) on about 4.3 square miles of Palos Township, ZIP code 60465, which makes it the largest of the Palos towns by population. Its neighbours are Palos Park, Palos Heights, Worth, Bridgeview and Hickory Hills.
95th Street, carrying US-12 and US-20, is the main east-west road, four lanes and undivided through the city. Pace runs several bus routes here, and the North Palos Fire Protection District has two stations in town.
Houses and apartment buildings
Palos Hills is about three quarters owner-occupied, but only a little over half its homes are single-unit; about a third of units are in buildings of five or more, by 2020 to 2024 census estimates. So pickups split between driveways and apartment lots. For a lot, let the manager know a tow is coming and tell us which space.
The overnight ban and the shoulder exception
Every night from 2:00 to 6:00 a.m., Palos Hills streets are closed to parking (§ 10.08.040). Two inches of snow on the ground closes them to parking at any hour (§ 10.08.030).
One local quirk: the shoulder. A car parked far enough off the road that every part of it is at least five feet from the pavement edge can stay through those hours, snow or not (§ 10.08.045). The police department also hands out overnight passes on request, three a year with up to three nights each, though none once snow is falling.
Roadside ditches are protected too: you can’t fill or block one to make a driveway unless a pipe keeps the water flowing (§ 10.08.047). If your car is parked over a ditch on a shoulder, mention it when you call; the driver approaches differently.
When a car is “inoperable” here
Palos Hills gives a dead car more time than its neighbours do, on paper. Its definition only kicks in after six months without being able to drive, and it leaves out cars stored indoors and historic vehicles at least 25 years old (§ 10.20.010). The street is another matter: a wrecked, junked or half-dismantled car may not be left on one at all (§ 10.20.030). Either kind is a nuisance wherever it sits, and a written notice obliges the owner to get rid of it (§§ 10.20.040, 10.20.050).
Six months sounds generous until you realise the street rule has no grace period. The full comparison is in the inoperable car rules guide, and our page on non-running cars covers how we buy them.
If the police towed it
A car towed by Palos Hills police ends up at a private yard, and the owner needs proof of ownership and current insurance to get it out. If the car isn’t worth paying to release and keep, call us before deciding; whether a sale works from there depends on the paperwork.
Vans, pickups and SUVs
If the vehicle is a work van or an old pickup, its weight works in your favour as scrap; see trucks, vans and SUVs.
